Highlights cost depends on how much of your head gets lightened, how long the appointment takes and whether you add toner. Most Kansas City area salons price highlights by coverage, length and density, so a single headline number can be misleading. Below are the current prices on Hoshika's menu, what each option covers, and how to plan a full year of upkeep so there are no surprises.

What you're paying for
Coverage
A partial foil focuses on the hair you see most: the part, the top layer and around your face. A full foil places highlights all through the head, including underneath and at the nape, so the brightness shows even when your hair is up or moving. More foils means more lightener and more time, which is the main reason full costs more. For a deeper look at the difference, see partial vs. full highlights.
Time
Foil work is detailed. Each section is woven or sliced, painted, folded and processed. A long appointment reflects careful placement, not padding.
Your starting point
Virgin hair lifts predictably. Old box dye or dark permanent color can lift unevenly and may need extra time or a different plan. That's what the free test strand is for.
Toner
Lightened hair often shows warm undertones. Toner or gloss adjusts that tone and adds shine. Many people book it with their highlight and again on its own between lightening visits.
Hairline blonding: the budget-friendly middle option
Hairline Blonding is $85 on the current menu and takes about 1 hour 30 minutes. It brightens only the face frame and hairline. It's useful when:
- Your highlights are still fine underneath, but the front looks grown out
- You want a bright face frame without committing to full foils
- You want to stretch time between bigger appointments

Annual budget examples
These examples use only current menu prices. They're starting points to talk through at your consultation. Your real schedule depends on how fast your hair grows, how much contrast you have between your roots and your blonde, and how you feel about grow-out.
Example 1: low-maintenance partials
- 2 脳 Partial Foil Highlight ($180 each)
- 2 脳 Toner/Gloss on its own ($45 each), between lightening visits
Best for: softer placement, natural-ish base color, people who don't mind a little root.
Example 2: full brightness, refreshed with partials
- 1 脳 Full Foil Highlight ($225)
- 2 脳 Partial Foil Highlight ($180 each)
- 2 脳 Toner/Gloss ($45 each)
Best for: people who want brightness all over but can refresh the most visible areas in between.
Example 3: face-frame focus
- 1 脳 Partial Foil Highlight ($180)
- 2 脳 Hairline Blonding ($85 each)
- 2 脳 Toner/Gloss ($45 each)
Best for: people who mainly care about brightness around the face and wear their hair down.
Multiply out the lines that match your plan and you'll have a realistic yearly number. Ask your stylist which pattern fits your hair and goals.
Highlights vs. balayage on cost
Balayage/Foiliage is $235 on the current menu, and it often grows out more softly than traditional foils. Some people spend more per visit but go longer between lightening appointments. Others prefer the more even, defined brightness of foils. Balayage vs. highlights explains the look and grow-out of each, and the balayage cost guide covers that service's pricing in depth.
How to compare highlight quotes
When comparing salons around Overland Park, Leawood or south Kansas City, ask:
- Is toner included, or is it a separate service?
- Is a haircut or blowout included?
- Is the price for partial or full coverage, and what does partial mean at this salon?
- Will my hair length or density change the price?
- Do you offer a test strand if I have old color in my hair?
- How often do you expect I'll need to come back?
Compare what you get, not just the starting number. A cheaper highlight that needs toner, a cut and a blowout added on may end up close to a higher, more complete quote.
Ways to stretch your highlight budget
- Choose placement that grows out softly. Finer, blended foils show less of a line at the root.
- Alternate full and partial visits. Full one time, partial the next.
- Use toner visits. A Toner/Gloss can freshen brassy blonde without a full lightening session.
- Protect your color at home. Purple shampoo used correctly, heat protectant and help for hard water all slow fading. See how to keep blonde hair bright.

Frequently asked questions
Does the highlight price include toner?
It depends on the salon, so always ask. On Hoshika's menu, Toner/Gloss is listed as its own service, so you can see exactly what each step costs.
Are partial highlights enough?
For many people, yes. Partial foils brighten the part, top and face frame, which is what you see most in the mirror, and they cost less and take less time than full foils.
Why would my highlight quote be higher than the menu price?
Very long or dense hair, previous box dye, or a big jump in brightness can add time or steps. A free consultation and test strand help you get a realistic quote before you commit.
How can I spend less on highlights over a year?
Choose placement that grows out softly, alternate full and partial visits, and use toner appointments to refresh between lightening sessions. Good at-home care keeps your blonde looking fresh longer.
