Summer nails can go bright: neon, citrus, coral, and chrome all look right in the sun. The trick is choosing a design and length that hold up to chlorine, sunscreen, lake water, and a lot of hand-washing. Short to medium Gel-X in almond, oval, or squoval is the sweet spot for most people. Here are 12 summer nail ideas, plus how to keep them looking good from the first pool day to the last.
Before you pick: set, shape, and pricing
Which set? Gel-X is light, natural-looking, and easy to wear in the water. A Gel X Set is $70 on the current menu. If you would rather keep your own length, a gel manicure works for most of these looks.
Which shape? Go a little shorter than usual for summer. Short almond, oval, and squoval are less likely to catch or crack during swimming and outdoor sports.
Pricing for art: Nail Art is priced by design. One accent nail costs less than full art on all ten. 3D details are a $10 add-on.
1. Neon French tips
A sheer nude or milky base with bright neon tips in orange, pink, green, or yellow. Try a different neon on each finger for a playful look.
- Suits: anyone who wants color without going all-over bright
- Shape: almond or coffin
- Tip: a thin tip line keeps it modern
2. Hot pink and orange
Alternate hot pink and bright orange across your fingers, or do a color block with both on each nail.
- Suits: people who love bold, warm color
- Shape: squoval or almond
- Pairs well with: gold jewelry and a tan
3. Fruit accents
Tiny lemons, cherries, strawberries, or watermelon slices on one or two accent nails, with solid color on the rest.
- Suits: a fun, playful vacation vibe

4. Sunset ombre
A fade from pink to orange to yellow, like a summer sunset. Works across one nail or across the whole hand.
- Suits: anyone who likes gradients
- Shape: coffin or almond shows the fade best
- Tip: ombre hides grow-out at the base, which helps on long trips

A pearly chrome powder over a sheer white or pink base. It catches sunlight beautifully without being loud.
- Suits: people who like shine but want something soft
- Shape: almond
- More info: the chrome nails guide explains the finishes

How to keep summer nails looking good
Pools and lakes
Chlorine and lake water dry out skin and the natural nail under your set. Long soaks make the nail flex, which can loosen edges.
- Rinse your hands with fresh water after swimming
- Dry them well, especially around the edges of the nails
- Oil your cuticles every night
- Keep length short to medium for water sports
The same routine helps your hair, too. This guide to summer pool and lake hair in Kansas City covers the hair side.
Sun
Bright and neon shades can dull with a lot of sun. A glossy gel top coat helps protect color, and a fill with fresh color brings it back.
Sunscreen and bug spray
Some sunscreens and sprays can leave a film that dulls shine. Wash your hands after applying, or apply with the backs of your hands when you can.
Heat and humidity
Kansas City summers are hot and humid, which means more hand-washing and sanitizer. Both dry out cuticles. Keep a small oil or hand cream in your bag.

Timing your summer appointments
- Before a vacation: a few days before you leave, so the set is fresh but settled
- Before a summer wedding: plan nails along with your hair trial and timeline
- Between trips: book a fill instead of stretching the set, especially if you swim a lot
If you are coming off a spring set, these spring nail ideas are a good look back at softer shades to rotate in. Heading to an outdoor show? These summer concert and festival hair ideas pair well with a bright set.

Frequently asked questions
Do neon nails fade in the sun?
Bright and neon shades can dull with a lot of sun and pool time. A good gel top coat helps, and a fill with fresh color brings them right back.
Is chlorine bad for Gel-X?
Chlorine and long soaks dry out the skin and natural nail around your set, which can lead to lifting. Rinse your hands after swimming, dry them well, and oil your cuticles at night.
What nail length is best for summer?
Short to medium is easiest for swimming, sports, sandals, and travel. Shorter nails are less likely to catch on towels, bags, and boat ropes.
Should I get nails done before a vacation?
Yes, a few days before you leave is ideal. That gives you time to get used to the set and catch any fit issues before you travel.
