Kansas City football season means red on Fridays, early-morning tailgates, and Sunday afternoons that go from mild to freezing by the fourth quarter. Your hair and nails can handle all of it with a little planning. Below are red-and-gold nail ideas, hairstyles that stand up to wind and hats, and cold-weather tips for game days around the metro.

Red Friday nails

Red Friday is the KC tradition of wearing red on the Friday before a big game. Nails are an easy way to join in, at work or anywhere else.

Red and gold ideas

  • Solid glossy red with one gold accent nail. Simple, polished, and office-friendly.
  • Red French tips. A nude or milky base with red tips, outlined in a thin gold line.
  • Gold glitter fade. Red base with gold glitter concentrated near the tip.
  • Stripes. Thin gold stripes over red, vertical or diagonal.
  • Chrome gold. A metallic gold set, with a red accent on the ring finger.
  • Checkerboard or color-block. Red and gold squares or halves on one or two nails.
  • Numbers or initials. A favorite number or your initials hand-painted on an accent nail.

Keep designs to colors and patterns rather than logos. They look sharp and work for the whole season.

Which set to get

If you want Consider
Natural length, simple red Gel Manicure ($35+)
Light extension, flat art Gel X Set ($70)
Longer length, heavier 3D details Acrylic Nail Set ($75)
Red for one weekend or a playoff party Custom Press-On Nails ($50, made to order)

Custom art is priced by design, and 3D details are a $10 add-on on the current menu. If you're keeping a set all season, plan for fills: a Gel-X fill is $45 and an acrylic fill is $50. For more on choosing, see Gel-X vs. acrylic nails.

Tailgates are hard on nails. Gloves for setup and cleanup, cuticle oil at night, and never using nails to open cans or pry lids will help a set last.

Game day hair that beats the wind

The parking lots outside the stadium are wide open, and fall wind in Kansas City can turn loose curls into knots in minutes. These styles hold up.

Two Dutch braids

The classic tailgate style. Two braids from hairline to nape stay put through wind, hats, and hugs. Add a red ribbon braided in, or tie the ends with red elastics.

  • Best for: Shoulder length and longer
  • Hat-friendly: Yes, under beanies and ball caps

Braided low pony

One Dutch or French braid down the back into a ponytail. Easier than two braids if you're doing your own hair.

  • Best for: Medium to long hair
  • Hat-friendly: Yes

Low sleek pony with a ribbon

A smooth low pony tied with a red or gold ribbon. Quick and tidy.

  • Best for: Shoulder length and longer
  • Hat-friendly: Works under a beanie or cap

Loose waves under a beanie

If you want hair down, put the curl in the lengths only and keep the crown smooth so the hat sits flat. Our flat iron waves tutorial works well for this.

  • Best for: Collarbone length and longer
  • Wind tip: Tuck lengths into your scarf when you're walking

Bubble braids

A ponytail sectioned with elastics and gently puffed. Fun, secure, and great with team colors.

  • Best for: Long hair or hair with extensions

Space buns

Two buns high on the head. They hold well and look playful for watch parties.

  • Best for: Medium to long hair
  • Hat-friendly: Not under a beanie, but fine with a headband or earmuffs

Short hair and bobs

Short hair can still go full game day. Try two tiny braids at the temples pinned back, a red claw clip or barrette on one side, or a deep side part with the short side tucked behind your ear. A red headband or earmuffs keep short hair from whipping around and add color. If your bob flips out in the wind, a smoothing cream on the ends before you leave helps it lie flat.

Extensions on game day

If you wear extensions, braids are your friend at a windy tailgate because they keep lengths from tangling at the nape. Avoid tight styles that pull on bonds or tapes, and brush gently once you're home. Our extension care guide covers the basics.

Hats and face-framing

Hats are part of the uniform once it gets cold. A few tricks keep your hair looking intentional:

  • Pull out face-framing pieces after the hat is on. A couple of soft pieces at the temples soften a beanie or cap.
  • Curl the front pieces away from your face so they don't fall into your eyes.
  • Wear the part you'll keep. Set your part before the hat goes on; changing it later leaves a dent.
  • Keep a mini brush and a few bobby pins in your bag for after the hat comes off.

If you already have a money piece or face-framing highlights, game day is when they really show. They brighten your face under a hat brim in photos.

Cold-weather hair care for game days

Late-season games can be cold and dry, and going from a freezing lot to a heated car or house is tough on hair.

  • Leave-in conditioner before you go. It helps with static and dryness.
  • Smoothing oil on the ends, not the roots.
  • Satin- or silk-lined hats cause less friction and frizz than plain knit.
  • Skip a fresh wash right before an early tailgate if your hair gets staticky; slightly lived-in hair often behaves better.
  • Deep condition on Monday. A weekly mask helps undo the wind and cold.

Planning around the schedule

  • Book nails earlier in the week so they're fresh for Red Friday and the weekend.
  • Request event hair ahead for playoff parties or watch parties where you'll be in photos. A Hairstyle (event styling) is $40 on the current menu and is request-to-book.
  • Consider press-ons for a one-time big game when you don't want a full set.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best hairstyle for a windy tailgate?

Braids are the most wind-proof option. Two Dutch braids, a single braid, or a braided low pony keep hair from tangling and still look good under a hat.

How do I wear my hair with a beanie without it going flat?

Keep the crown smooth and put the volume in the lengths instead, with loose waves or braids. Pull a few face-framing pieces out once the hat is on.

What nail designs work for Red Friday?

Red and gold in any combination: solid red with a gold accent nail, red French tips, gold glitter fades, or simple stripes. Ask for custom art if you want a specific pattern.

How do I stop static under a winter hat?

Use a leave-in conditioner or a little smoothing oil on your lengths, choose a hat with a satin or silk lining if you can, and avoid brushing hair right after pulling the hat off.
