How Much Do Hair Extensions Cost in Kansas City? What You're Paying For

Hair extension cost in Kansas City, broken down: install labor, hair bought separately, move-ups, removal and care, plus how to budget a full year of wear.

Hair extensions cost is really three costs: the install, the hair itself, and the upkeep that keeps them looking good. Most Kansas City area salons price extensions by method, length, how much hair you need and how long the work takes, so a single online number rarely tells the whole story. This guide breaks down each piece, shows the current install prices on Hoshika's menu, and helps you plan for a full year instead of just day one.

The three parts of an extension budget

Part What it covers When you pay
Install The stylist's time and skill to place, cut and blend the extensions At your first appointment
Hair The extension hair itself, chosen and color-matched to you Before or at the install
Upkeep Move-ups, eventual removal, and at-home care products Ongoing

Most surprise costs come from people budgeting only for the first line.

Install prices by method

These are the current menu prices at Beauty, Boldly Done. Extension services are request-to-book, and the hair is purchased separately and color-matched at your consultation.

Method Install time Install price
K Tip (Fusion) Extensions About 5 hours $300, plus hair
Sew In Extensions About 3 hours $200, plus hair
Tape-In About 2 hours Starts at $125, plus hair

Why the spread? Labor. K-tips are placed one small strand at a time, so the appointment is the longest. Sew-ins involve braiding and sewing each row. Tape-ins use wider wefts, so fewer attachments cover more of your head.

Not sure which method fits your hair? The K-tip vs. tape-in vs. sew-in comparison covers how each one feels and wears.

What drives the cost of the hair

The hair is the most variable part of your budget, which is why it's quoted at your consultation rather than listed as one number. Four things move it:

Length

Longer hair costs more. It takes more raw hair to make, and long lengths of good quality are harder to source.

Amount (grams)

Extension hair is usually sold by weight. Someone adding subtle fullness to the ends needs less than someone going from a bob to mid-back length. Your own density matters too: thick hair needs more extension hair to blend, while fine hair can only carry so much weight.

Quality

Higher-quality human hair with the cuticle kept intact and aligned tangles less, blends better and is more likely to survive a move-up and be reused. Lower-quality hair may cost less up front but often needs replacing sooner.

Color

Your hair is matched to your color at the consultation. Multi-tonal blends for highlighted or balayage hair sometimes mean combining shades.

The upkeep you'll pay over time

Move-ups

As your hair grows, attachments slide down and need to be moved back up. The Move Up service starts at $100 on the current menu and is listed at about 4 hours, varying by method. How often you need one depends on your method and how fast your hair grows. For what happens at that visit, see extension move-ups and removal explained.

Replacement hair

Good hair can often be reused for a few cycles, but some loss is normal. You may need to add or replace some hair at a move-up, especially with K-tips, which are usually re-bonded.

Removal

When you're done or taking a break, Removal starts at $100 on the current menu and is listed at about 2 hours.

At-home care

Plan for a few products: a gentle sulfate-free shampoo, a lightweight conditioner for the lengths, a heat protectant, an extension-safe brush and a silk or satin pillowcase. You may already own some of these. The hair extension care guide explains what to look for.

How to budget for a year

Rather than one total, build your year from these lines:

  1. Install: one appointment at your method's menu price, plus your hair quote.
  2. Move-ups: multiply the move-up price (starts at $100) by how many your stylist expects you'll need in a year. Ask for this estimate at your consultation.
  3. Hair top-ups: set aside a cushion for adding or replacing some hair during the year.
  4. Removal: add one removal (starts at $100) if you plan to take them out within the year.
  5. Products: a one-time setup, then occasional refills.

Two habits help keep the yearly number predictable:

  • Book move-ups on time. Late move-ups often mean more matting to work through and more hair loss from the extensions.
  • Care for the hair. The better it's treated, the more likely it can be reused instead of replaced.

How to compare extension quotes

When you're calling around Overland Park, Olathe or the wider Kansas City area, ask each salon the same questions:

  • Does the install price include the hair, or is it separate?
  • How much hair do you expect I'll need, and in what length?
  • Is the hair human hair, and can it be reused at move-ups?
  • How often will I need move-ups, and what do they cost?
  • Is a cut and blend included with the install?
  • What does removal cost?

A lower install price with a short move-up schedule and hair that can't be reused can cost more over a year than a higher install with longer-lasting hair. Compare whole-year costs, the same way you would with color. The balayage cost guide uses the same approach for hair color.

Start with the free consultation

The consultation is where your actual number comes together. Your stylist checks your density and hair health, talks about the length and fullness you want, recommends a method and quotes your hair. It's free and takes about 15 minutes. If you want to arrive ready, see how to prepare for your extensions appointment.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't the hair included in the extension price?

Extension hair varies widely in length, amount and quality, and every client needs a different combination. Pricing the install and the hair separately lets your stylist match the hair to your goals and color instead of using a one-size bundle.

Is the first install the most expensive part?

Usually, yes, because you pay for the install and the hair at once. After that, ongoing cost is mostly move-ups, any hair you add or replace, and care products.

Can I save money by doing my own move-ups or removal?

It's not worth the risk. DIY removal and reapplication are the most common causes of breakage with extensions, and repairing that damage costs more than the visit you skipped.

Do I need a consultation before getting a price?

Yes. The hair quote depends on your density, the length and fullness you want and your color, so the consultation is where your real number comes together. It's free and takes about 15 minutes.
