How to Prepare for a Hair Extensions Appointment

How to prepare for hair extensions: what to bring to your consult, budgeting for hair bought separately, day-of prep, appointment times, and aftercare.

The best extension appointments start well before install day. Come to your consultation with photos, an honest hair history, and a real budget that includes the hair itself. Then show up on install day with clean, dry hair, a free afternoon, and a plan for aftercare. Here's how to prepare at each step so your extensions blend and last.

Step 1: Know the basics before your consult

At Beauty, Boldly Done, three methods are on the menu: K-tip (fusion), tape-in, and sew-in. All extension services are request-to-book, the hair is purchased separately, and it's color-matched at your consultation. If you want a deeper look at how they differ, read the K-tip vs tape-in vs sew-in comparison.

Here's how the current menu breaks down:

Service Appointment time Price (current menu)
K-Tip (Fusion) install 5 hr $300 plus hair
Sew-In install 3 hr $200 plus hair
Tape-In install 2 hr Starts at $125 plus hair
Move Up 4 hr Starts at $100, varies by method
Removal 2 hr Starts at $100, varies by method
Consultation 15 min Free

Prices can change. The services page has the latest menu.

Step 2: Prepare for your consultation

The consultation is where your stylist decides whether extensions fit your hair, which method works best, how much hair you need, and what shade to order. The more you bring, the better the plan.

Bring photos

  • Your goal. Length, fullness, and how you wear your hair most days.
  • What you don't want. Too thick at the bottom, too straight, visible tracks.
  • Your own hair down, in daylight. Front, sides, and back, so your current length and density are easy to see.

Look for inspiration photos with hair density and texture similar to yours. A very thick goal on very fine hair may need a slower build.

Share your hair history

Be honest. It affects which method is safe and how the hair will blend.

  • Color in the last year, including box dye, lightener, and gloss
  • Any past extensions, which method, and how they came out
  • Shedding, breakage, or thin spots you've noticed
  • How often you heat style, and with what tools
  • Medications or life changes that have affected your hair, if you're comfortable sharing

Think about your lifestyle

  • Do you work out often or swim?
  • How often do you want to wash?
  • Do you wear your hair up a lot? Ponytails and updos can show bonds or tapes if placement doesn't account for them.
  • How much time do you want to spend styling?

Plan your budget

Extensions have three cost pieces, and people often only plan for one:

  1. The install. The service price on the menu.
  2. The hair. Purchased separately. The amount and type depend on your goal and your natural hair.
  3. Maintenance. Move-ups as your hair grows, and eventually removal.

Ask your stylist to walk through all three so there are no surprises. If you're also planning color, add that in too. The what to ask your stylist checklist covers budget questions worth asking before any big change.

Step 3: Plan color and cut timing

Extensions are matched to your natural hair. If you're planning a color change, get it done before the install so the match is right. If you want dimension, talk about whether to color your own hair, choose extension hair with blended tones, or both.

A trim or shaping cut is often part of blending extensions so the ends look natural. Ask at your consult how that fits into the plan.

Step 4: Prep the week before

  • Skip big chemical services close to the install unless they're part of the plan.
  • Deep condition earlier in the week, not the day before. Heavy masks can leave residue.
  • Avoid new products. Stick with what you know so there are no surprises.
  • Clear your calendar. K-tip installs are listed at 5 hours on the current menu. Plan food, a phone charger, and no rush after.
  • Confirm your appointment details. Ask whether your hair is in and ready, and double-check the time.

Step 5: Install day

Arrive with clean, dry hair

For bonds and tapes especially, the roots need to be free of oil, silicone, and conditioner so the attachment holds. Ask your stylist exactly how they want you to arrive. Common guidance:

  • Wash with a clarifying or gentle shampoo
  • Skip conditioner at the roots
  • No oils, serums, leave-ins, or dry shampoo
  • Fully dry, no damp spots

Bring

  • Water and a snack for longer installs
  • Headphones or something to watch
  • A hair tie and a soft scarf for the drive home if it's windy
  • Any questions you thought of after your consult

Wear

A button-up or zip top so you don't pull a shirt over fresh extensions. Skip big earrings.

Step 6: Aftercare starts the same day

The first few days matter. Your stylist will go over method-specific aftercare, but these basics apply to most:

  • Brush gently from the ends up, holding near the root.
  • Wait before the first wash as your stylist recommends.
  • Keep oils and heavy conditioner off bonds and tapes.
  • Sleep with your hair dry in a loose braid or low ponytail.
  • Use heat protectant and keep hot tools away from attachments.

These guides go deeper:

Step 7: Book your maintenance before you leave

As your natural hair grows, extensions move away from the scalp. Move-ups bring them back into place, and a removal is the safe way to take them out. Never remove bonds or tapes yourself. Ask your stylist how often your method typically needs a move-up, and get your next visit on the calendar.

Quick prep checklist

  • Photos of your goal and what you don't want
  • Full hair history, including color and past extensions
  • Budget for install, hair, and maintenance
  • Color done before install
  • Clean, dry, product-free hair on install day
  • A free afternoon
  • Aftercare basics ready at home

Frequently asked questions

Should I color my hair before or after getting extensions?

Usually before. Your natural hair should be the color you want so the extension hair can be matched to it. Plan color first, then the install, and talk timing through at your consultation.

Do I need a consultation before extensions?

Yes. Extensions at Beauty, Boldly Done are request-to-book, and the free consultation is where method, hair amount, and color match are decided.

Can I wash my hair right after extensions are installed?

Ask your stylist what timing they recommend for your method. Tapes and bonds in particular benefit from a little time before the first wash.

What if I have thin or fine hair?

Fine hair can wear extensions well when the method, weight, and placement fit your hair. That's exactly what the consultation is for.
